Abraham and Sarah tried to help by not waiting on God’s promise. They decided to move ahead of God by using Sarah’s handmaiden to conceive a child. They failed to wait on the manifestation of God’s promise.

Nothing. They were helping themselves when Sarah offered her handmaiden to Abraham agreed. They threw a bolt in the fan causing it to malfunction. Ishmel was not the promise; he was a product of Abraham and Sarah not waiting well.

What did they do to help God? Abraham going really believe because of his age and Sarah laughed because of her age and she went to her handmaiden to go and lay with her husband she did and because of her obedience God blessed her just as well.

Sarai decided to help God out by attempting to make the promise God gave to Abram happen themselves. She offered her handmade Hagar to her husband to bare a child for them. Abram agreed with his wife and went into Hagar. Hager later gave birth to Ishmael.

I always thought that Ishmael came after the promise. Thus thinking that they got tired of waiting, aborted the process and took matters in their own hands producing an Ishmael and not the promised child. However, as I read it again, I see that Sarai gave her handmaid, Hagar to Abram in Chap 16 and the 1st promise didn’t come until Chap. 17 when it was revealed to Abram in a dream and then to Him again in Chap. 18 when the three men appeared and Sarah over heard. Therefore, I really don’t know what they did to help God besides laugh.
